The grantee, working in the Ponta da Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, will ensure the protection and monitoring of loggerhead and leatherback marine turtle females, nests, and habitat. At the same time, they will increase economic benefits for local communities within the reserve area via well-organized and planned nature-based tourism. By the close of the project, at least 200 loggerheads and 20 leatherback marine turtles will be monitored and tagged; there will be a reduction in turtle mortality by ten percent compared to the 2011/2012 nesting season, and at least 200 members of local communities living in the area will become more actively involved in the conservation of marine turtles through monitoring of females and nest locations.
Strategic Direction:
1 Strengthen protection and management in undercapacitated and emerging protected areas in 3 priority key biodiversity areas
